Promoting Opportunity – The Fulfilling the Dream Fund is a new report by Public Interest Projects that documents our ambitious, collaborative effort to promote and protect affirmative action. The Fulfilling the Dream Fund, galvanized and anchored by then-President of the Ford Foundation Susan V. Berresford in the wake of the 2003 Grutter v. Bollinger Supreme Court decision upholding the use of race conscious admissions, was centered on a belief in core American values and equality of opportunity in our country.
It is a critical moment in this country’s efforts to advance equal opportunity for all. The Supreme Court recently agreed to hear Fisher v. University of Texas, the first federal appellate challenge to the Supreme Court’s 2003 decision in Grutter v. Bollinger. This will be a key case given the change in the make-up of the Supreme Court since 2003.
Before it made final grants last year, the Fund supported a number of important efforts across the country that led to significant victories in the fight for racial and gender equity. There are continuing opportunities to remain involved and active in advancing the goals outlined in this report. Many of the groups supported by the Dream Fund continue to fight to protect affirmative action and several have advanced innovative models that promote equal access to education. In addition, key organizations funded by the Dream Fund continue to meet as a work group to raise awareness of key wedge issues being used to divide the public for political gain.
Public Interest Projects is proud to have housed the Fulfilling the Dream Fund. Our commitment to this work and its grantees continues. Through our U.S. Human Rights Fund, we supported a three-day convening for funders, grantees and allies about how to use human rights values, standards and strategies to secure racial justice. This Spring, we will unveil an online resource for advocates and funders to learn more about these issues.
