CLOUT and Louisville Schools Partner to Improve School Climate
Keeping its commitments to Citizens of Louisville Organized and United Together (CLOUT), Jefferson County Public Schools (KY) launched a comprehensive policy to address bullying, announced upcoming Code of Conduct revisions to promote restorative practices, and reported that 42 schools already want to implement restorative practices. CLOUT congregation leaders worked closely with Superintendent Donna Hargens’ office since April to develop these systematic approaches to improve school climate. Read more
NYC Communities Seek an End to the Flood of Suspensions
As part of the Dignity in Schools Campaign (DSC) National Week of Action on School Pushout, the DSC-New York chapter – including Urban Youth Collaborative – galvanized youth leaders (see photo below) for a candlelight vigil and march to raise awareness about New York Public Schools suspending 260 students a day. New Orleans Families Release Film on Halting the School-to-Prison Pipeline
Also as part of the DSC’s National Week of Action, Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children (FFLIC) produced, screened and facilitated a community discussion (see photo below) on What Will It Take to Stop the School to Prison Pipeline – a documentary about ending Louisiana’s pushing out and locking up of students at alarming rates. Buffalo Parents Lead the Way toward Reducing Suspensions
Alliance for Quality Education (AQE) and Citizen Action parent leaders are working to revise the student Code of Conduct with Buffalo Public Schools – which currently suspends nearly 20% of students each year, roughly four times the state average. The Buffalo News supports AQE leaders’ call for more decisive action and a steadfast focus on implementation. Read more
