International Human Rights Funders Group

The International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG) is an association of grantmakers supporting efforts to achieve the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights so that all people may enjoy a fully human existence. PIP serves as fiscal sponsor to IHRFG, which is closely aligned with PIP's overall mission.

IHRFG began in 1994 as a group of U.S. foundations with international programs that addressed human rights issues abroad. Due to advances in the field, however, IHRFG no longer treats human rights as a foreign concern, but rather recognizes the value of human rights work at home as well. As a result, IHRFG itself is now international, with members in Canada, Europe and the southern hemisphere.

IHRFG programs and services continually evolve to address the growing needs of the human rights community - both grantseekers and grantmakers, at home and abroad. To that end, IHRFG works to:

  • Promote the exchange of information and collaboration among grantmakers
  • Improve the use, reach and effectiveness of existing resources
  • Expand resources to meet the growing needs of the field
  • Help other funders to explore the added value of a human-rights approach
