Legacies of War

Legacies of War is a public-education program and advocacy campaign created to:

  • Raise awareness in the U.S. and broader international community about Laos and the legacies of the Vietnam War-era bombing
  • Advocate for increased U.S. and international support for the removal of unexploded ordnance in Laos and greater assistance to survivors of the bombing
  • Engage communities in discussions of peace and security issues by using the lessons learned from the history and legacies of war in Laos to stimulate dialogue, as well as to end the use of cluster munitions, and
  • Strengthen the capacity of the Laotian American community to advocate on this and other issues of concern in their communities

Legacies of War's traveling exhibition and educational programming seek to connect communities nationally and create opportunities for engagement and advocacy. Since its founding in 2004, the project has:

  • Launched the www.legaciesofwar.org website and begun developing the National Traveling Exhibition
  • Made numerous public presentations, including at the First International Conference on Lao Studies in 2005, the Seattle Hiroshima to Hope keynote address in 2006, and to the Lao American Society in Atlanta, GA
  • Developed a high school curriculum about the bombing in Laos, and marketed it to various education networks
  • Created a Legacies of War Artist's Collaboration to tour with the traveling exhibition, and
  • Arranged to open its first full museum exhibition, in Boston, in September 2007
